This workshop was held in Edinburgh Printmakers as part of Gill’s exhibition there. This was for children aged 8-12. The aim was to introduce them to stone lithography in an accessible and solvent free way. Gill & the children printed using soap washes, a technique which Gill helped to introduce to Edinburgh Printmakers and one which Gill uses herself. According to our sources, nobody had held a litho workshop for children this young before. “The children got the hang of the process much more quickly than most adults! “

This work was part of Hannah’s six week residency on the Shetland Isles. During Hannah’s residency she worked with primary schools across the islands delivering environmental art workshops to raise awareness of environmental issues. Hannah played games with the children to learn about the nature of different materials, exploring whether they were biodegradable, reusable or recyclable.
The children then went on to create woven wall hangings from old fishing nets and the scrap which they had collected. At the end of Hannah’s residency the children’s work was exhibited alongside her own work, celebrating Da Voar Redd-up (the annual spring clean of the islands’ beaches).
