The pre-school age group category title for the selection of entries above was ‘’Birds”. We had to consider  what kind of birds we see each day, what do birds eat? where do they sleep? What is the smallest & biggest bird you can think of? We then looked at a painting by Joseph Crawhall ‘The White Drake’ (1895) which is in the collection of The National Gallery of Scotland.

The children were all able to talk about ducks which they had seen, how they walked, what ducks sound like & the environment in which they live.

These ducks are all very characterful & can be seen waddling around amongst grass & water.

These are a selection of entries for an annual competition at The National Gallery. In 2006 a Tot Art pupil won a prize - Click to read item in the local press

The pre-school age group category title for the selection of entries above was ‘In the Woods’. We had to consider Who lives in the woods in this country and in other countries? What can you see if you look up high or down low? When do the colour of the leaves change? We then looked at a painting by Robert Burns ‘Diana and her Nymphs’ 1926 (made to decorate Crawford’s Tea Rooms in Prince’s Street Edinburgh). In Robert Burn’s painting he added a small green car in the bottom left just for fun as he loved cars. Can you see what  these children have hidden at the bottom their paintings?
